Heart Rhythm 2009: Meeting Highlights

The Heart Rhythm Society's 30th Annual Scientific Sessions took place May 13-16, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts. Enclosed below is a compilation of highlights from the meeting.

Routine EKG Screenings May Save Athletes’ Lives: New Study Reveals Abnormalities Identified by EKGs Not Detected by History and Physicals

Electrocardiography-based screenings among elite collegiate athletes find potentially important pathology that is not detected by history and physical examinations alone, according to a new study released at Heart Rhythm 2009. This is the first study to evaluate the costs and yield of routine EKG screenings in a large group of high-level performing college athletes.

Young ICD Connection: The 2008 Annual Conference

October 17 and 18, 2008 marked the 12th annual University of Michigan Hospital’s Young ICD Connection Conference. This annual conference, presented by the University of Michigan’s Cardiovascular and Congenital Heart Centers, provides a venue for young ICD recipients and their families to come together for the purpose of support, education, and the opportunity to meet and connect with others who share similar experiences.

American Heart Association 2008 Scientific Sessions: Highlights

Medtronic Data Presented at American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2008 Supports Utility of Painless Pacing Therapies in ICD Patients

New data presented at Scientific Sessions 2008 from Medtronic shows that survival among patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) treated only with anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) was superior to patients who experienced at least one shock-treated episode, further demonstrating the clinical benefit of ATP. Additionally, the analysis evaluating more than 2,000 patients found no link between inappropriate therapy and mortality, nor a causal relationship between ICD therapy (ATP or shock) and mortality.

ATP allows most patients with ICDs to receive painless pacing pulses to safely and effectively terminate dangerous ventricular tachyarrhythmias.

Young Hearts with ICDs: The 2008 Annual Conference

The care of patients goes well beyond recommendations, medications, or interventions. Once a year, at our annual “Young Hearts with ICDs” conference, we get a better glimpse of what our patients and families experience on a daily basis, sharing in their setbacks and triumphs. Inevitably, we walk away better health care providers and better people.

As one young woman stated, “This conference has been such an amazing and uplifting experience for me. Every year there is always someone that I connect with in a new way, who invariably impacts my life simply by sharing our stories, our hurts, our successes and our laughter. But what I love best is that the people have become my family. I look forward to this reunion every year.”
