The new training center is one of many EP advancements recently announced by St. David s Medical Center. This includes the installation of several new clinical technologies such as the Stereotaxis Niobe ® system and the Sensei Robotic Catheter System in 2007. St. David s Medical Center is one of two facilities in the United States to offer both technologies.
It is also important to note that in today s EP environment, very few physicians are able to treat patients with atrial fibrillation due to the complexity of cases. This new training facility will increase the potential to educate more physicians about atrial fibrillation ablation techniques and other challenging procedures. It is the mission of St. David s Medical Center and Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute to train the entire EP community, including national and international physicians.

What is the size of your EP lab facility and number of staff members? What is the mix of credentials at your lab?
The Arrhythmia Service at Caritas St. Elizabeth s Medical Center is comprised of two state-of-the-art EP labs. Our staff of four electrophysiologists, two EP fellows, one cardiology fellow, one physician assistant, ten registered nurses, three radiology technologists, one engineer, a lab assistant, one secretary and one scheduling coordinator moved into this new space from a single outdated lab in the spring of 2005. We also have an affiliated device clinic that is run by two experienced nurse practitioners.
We have two Philips labs, one of which features the first in the world integration of Stereotaxis with the advanced Philips imaging system.
When was the EP lab started at your institution?

Why did you choose to work in the field of electrophysiology?
It was more or less a natural progression from the cath lab. As a nurse, I was often asked to sedate patients for EP studies. When EP separated from the cath lab, I followed.
Describe your role in the EP lab. What is a typical day like for you?
There is no typical day. My official job description is EP Educational Coordinator. My duties include planning and implementing staff education (on and off site) and ensuring that staff competencies are up to date. I also revised our EP tech clinical ladder and the sedation nurse orientation process, and I assist with scheduling clinical time for our EP internship.

Most physicians look to an information technology department or specialized Web site developer to create their online presence by way of Web sites. While useful, these can be expensive to develop, cumbersome to update, and limited in their ability to interact with visitors to their site. More recently, a growing number of physicians are turning to a web log, or blog, to meet the ever-growing Internet marketplace head-on. For colleagues in the cardiovascular or cardiac electrophysiology fields, blogs can serve as a rich resource for information for patients, lab staff, hospital administration, and colleagues regarding one s program or interests.

PETER J. WELLS, MD: In this webcast, we will talk about what role cryoablation can play in the practice of interventional electrophysiology. I am joined by Dr. George Van Hare, who is a professor of pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco and Stanford, and by my colleague Dr. Rajjit Abrol. Raj was a fellow here with us in EP and has now moved on to be an attending and is one of the EP faculty here at Baylor.

New Questions:
Catheter Recycling
I have a concern regarding recycling medical catheters. I have been sending catheters to a recycling company for about 10 years. I have always sent the catheter tips in an envelope provided by the company. I have always sent it through secure and insured mail. I have no way of knowing the value of the tips other than based upon the value of the last shipment. The insurance is only valid for the shipment; after it is signed for, the insurance is invalid. Recently, within the last six months, I have not heard from the recycling company, other t

Dear readers,
In our January issue, we featured several articles about promising research and technologies for 2008. This month, we highlight some innovative new EP institutions, including:
In our interview with Dr. Jose Jalife, he talks about his move from SUNY Upstate Medical University to the University of Michigan (U-M) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to establish the U-M Center for Arrhythmia Research. As Dr. Jalife says, this new center will be a unique translational research and training environment that will go from the bench to the bedside. Renovations are currently undergoing, so the move will start around March 15, 2008.
