The Iowa Clinic, P.C. is among the most respected multi-specialty clinics in the Midwest. Heart & Vascular Care, a division of the Iowa Clinic, conducts more than ten outreach clinics throughout Central Iowa and has a satellite clinic in southwest Iowa staffed by two cardiologists. The physician referral base covers a large portion of central Iowa, including small county hospitals as well as internal medicine physicians within the Des Moines metro area. Heart & Vascular Care sees approximately 20,000 clinic patients per year and is the primary or consulting physician on approximately 3,000 hospital patients per year in the Des Moines metro area.

The Importance of Mobile Cardiac Outpatient Telemetry (MCOT) Monitoring for the Detection of Cardiac Arrhythmias
A 46-year-old male presented with an episode of syncope and several episodes of near syncope. Over the past four months, he had several abrupt episodes of near syncope that typically occurred without warning and were without associated symptoms such as diaphoresis, nausea or palpitations. His episodes have occurred while both standing and sitting, and typically lasted for only a few seconds before subsiding completely. One episode, however, lasted long enough to lead to a transient loss of consciousness and mild bruising from his fall.

The Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), and European Cardiac Arrhythmia Society (ECAS) have recently released their Expert Consensus Statement regarding catheter and surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF).1 These recommendations serve as a guide for practicing clinical cardiac electrophysiologists with respect to the performance of ablative procedures to treat AF in a manner that is appropriate with standard clinical practice in 2007.

Cryoablation of an Anteroseptal Pathway in a High-Risk Patient
Anteroseptal accessory pathways make obvious the concerns of one of the most dreaded complications of SVT ablation: AV block. SVT most often occurs in young, otherwise healthy patients for whom AV block can be a much worse disease than the tachyarrhythmia. We present a case of an anteroseptal pathway in which the implications to the patient are made much more obvious by his intentions to become a professional athlete.

We have four electrophysiologists, two EP fellows, two procedure lab RNs, four procedure lab cardiovascular technicians (all from an accredited CVT Program), one RN coordinator, and one nurse practitioner. The Cardiac Cath Lab Director manages the EP lab. The EP lab has a dedicated staff but can cross-cover in all areas of the cath lab.
