We are surveying labs throughout the country for feedback regarding staffing practices. How many staff members are required to perform procedures? What is the role/function of each person? Have you ever performed procedures with less than a full team (as defined by your institution)? Where have you obtained data to support your standard of care?

Typically there are 3 roles. Sedator,circulator/monitor and scrub. Most case types require 3 bodies. Many facilities feel the optimal staffing number is 4 per lab so cases can go uninterupted by breaks/lunches. We often are under that number and yes we have worked with only 2 staff in a room with the physician performing the scrub role independently.

We have a core group of Reg Nurses who are trained to circulate and scrub. Usually 2 in the room during a case. After catheters are insitu one of the RN's can go on break. Training consisted of "on the job learn as you go" and some basic EP classes. The 2 RN's who are learning the monitoring on the EP workmate are buddied together for a yr. Overall it has been a challenging learning experience.
